Shipping Minister visits Britain's most important port cluster
The vital part that the Haven Gateway ports play in the regional, national and international supply chain and broader economy was underlined when the new Shipping Minister, Mike Penning, spent the day in Felixstowe and Harwich.
This was the Minister’s first official visit to a major ports cluster since his appointment as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.
“We were delighted to welcome Mike Penning to the ‘front line’ so soon after his appointment as Minister,” said Haven Gateway Partnership George Kieffer. “The Haven Ports represent the most important ports cluster in the United Kingdom and this was an excellent opportunity to explain the importance and success of what we do.”
The major economic impact of the Haven Gateway’s ports, shipping and logistics sector was demonstrated in a recent study which shows that the sector has an annual turnover of about £3 billion and directly employs 32,200 people in the sub-region. This equates to providing 11.3% of total employee jobs in the Haven Gateway.
On the Minister’s itinerary on Monday 19 July were:
- The Port of Felixstowe, where he saw the progress of the Felixstowe South deepwater expansion and also heard about the port’s excellent rail performance. This year almost 500,000 containers will be carried by rail to and from Felixstowe – this is more than the total throughput of many ports in the UK, and represents 27% of the domestic containers handled at Felixstowe. The Minister also went on board the giant containership Ebba Maersk, which was alongside at the port.
- Harwich International Port, where there was an opportunity to view the laydown and assembly areas for offshore wind turbines – a sector in which the port has developed particular expertise.
- Harwich Haven Authority, the conservancy, navigation and pilotage authority for the estuary, which arranged a tour of the harbour for the Minister on its new launch, the St Brendan.
- Trinity House Lighthouse Service’s Harwich headquarters and buoy yard.
