Achievements
Since it's formation in 2001 the Haven Gateway Partnership has achieved the following:-
  • The Sub-region has received formal designation from Government as a New Growth Point which in the first year will unlock £5.5 million being made available for major projects in Colchester and Ipswich.
  • Successfully bid for £237,000 funding for a Tendring Community Broadband Project co-ordinated by Tendring District Council.
  • Employed a Cruise Co-ordinator to work with key partners to develop, implement and sustain an integrated programme to promote the Haven Gateway sub-region to cruise companies and cruise industry intermediaries.
  • Installed interactive kiosks in Harwich Passenger Terminal, Hawrich Cruise reception and the Hook of Holland passenger terminal buildings to provide live, regularly updated data on the region's tourism product.
  • The Partnership submitted a Business Plan to EEDA under the Investing in Communities programme and formal designtation was received for £800k during 2006/2007.
  • Commissioned three major studies to inform the non-statutory planning framework document being produced focussing on employment land, housing capacity and infrastructure and regeneration.
  • Developed Masterplans for Harwich, Felixstowe and Shotley and a website for the Harwich masterplan produced.
  • The Haven Gateway is the only UK partner in Port-Net which is an European Commission funded project that brings together over 20 ports from across Europe, which also includes Kaliningrad in the Russian federation. The UK is the most active partner attending workshops and seminars across Europe in order to raise the profile of the Haven Gateway and more importantly sharing best practice and information with the Haven Gateway’s ports and Logistics Businesses.
  • To support the long term economic growth of the sub-region the Haven Gateway has embarked, with the support of East of England International, on promoting the Haven Gateway and it’s businesses in China. Two seminars were held in Shanghai and Shenzhen promoting the Haven Gateway as a Natural Logistics Platform for the UK and Europe.
  • Two studies have been commissioned on the Haven Gateway’s Marine Leisure business. The first study looks at the economic impact of the sector locally and the second into the skills needs of the industry.
  • The Porthole group was developed by the Haven Gateway to support the HR community within the Haven Gateways Ports and Logistics businesses. It aims to promote and share best practice, provide a discussion forum for the latest HR and employment issues including the new legislation.
  • With the development of the University Campus Suffolk in Ipswich, the Haven Gateway saw this as an ideal opportunity to target the largest business sector in the area, Ports and Logistics, as a market for a new Foundation degree in Ports, Shipping and Transport. We have been working with West Suffolk College to ensure that this degree meets the needs of the local industry and it will be available in September 2007.
  • Together with the Port of Felixstowe and Harwich International Port, the Haven Gateway has developed a programme of sea port role plays based around disaster scenarios at sea. Each role play has involved more than 100 students and has been rolled out across Suffolk and Essex. It’s main aim is to raise the profile of the sector amongst the younger generation to ensure we have a workforce for the future.
  • In October 2006 20 delegates from across Europe participated in the Port-Net Haven Gateway Best Practice Tour. The results showed that it had so far been the most successful of all the workshops held in the Port-Net project.
