Associated British Ports
As the UK's largest ports group, Associated British Ports (ABP) handles about a quarter of the country's seaborne trade, with 21 ports around the UK. Of those, 11 are shortsea ports, including the Port of Ipswich.
The geographical spread of ABP ports is quite unique, and a major selling point for the company. Unlike operators of single ports, ABP as a group can offer customers a complete, flexible and versatile service to handle any commodity to and from anywhere else in the world. The Port of Ipswich, located at the head of the River Orwell, being 19 kms from the open sea, is within a short sailing time of the principal North Sea shipping lanes. It has direct rail and excellent road links, allowing easy and fast transportation of goods to destinations throughout the UK, and prides itself on being able to provide a 'one-stop-shop' for a range of specialist port-related services.
Ipswich port's main trades are dry and liquid bulks, forest products, and unit loads, both ro-ro and lo-lo. The port has benefited from substantial investment since it was purchased by ABP in March 1997.
