Green Infrastructure

The development of Green infrastructure (GI) in the Haven Gateway has been treated as a high priority in recent years. The development of an overarching GI strategy and an investment programme using Growth Point Funding to deliver elements of it, was driven and guided by a steering group with members from a range of regional and national organisations, including; local authorities, Natural England, Groundwork, the Essex and Suffolk Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB.

Key achievements:

  • Secured the adoption of a Green Infrastructure Strategy in 2008, which has served as a key reference document for many local authorities ever since.
  • Allocated and delivered £200,000 of Growth Point Funding to 6 GI projects; including improvements to the River Gipping in Ipswich and also upriver, improvements to Belsted Brook Park and a study which led to a new management plan for the Suffolk Sandlings.
  • Developed in partnership with Groundwork East of England, the “I love Landscapes” initiative to encourage local community groups to take on local GI projects themselves and secure community support for their delivery. This led to a public vote and the success of the Shotley Gate river walk project, which won the prize of £18,000.
  • Identified 165 landscape projects that might need developing in the future.
