Innovation ICT/R&D
The Haven Gateway sub-region has particular strengths in ICT, with clusters centred around BT and other telecoms at the Innovation Martlesham, Ipswich, and the University of Essex Knowledge Gateway. Research and Development is at a very high level in the sub-region and contributes significantly to an increasing knowledge economy and higher value jobs.
BT directly employs over 12,500 people in the East of England, and makes a financial impact of over £1.2 billion a year in the region. It spends over £225 million with local suppliers and spent more than £1 billion on new service innovation last year, much of which took place at Adastral Park.
