Benefits and value of Green Infrastructure
Businesses, developers, wildlife, walkers and residents all benefit from Green infrastructure (GI). GI can take many forms: regional parks, canals, paths and ponds. All of these spaces perform a range of functions. They have many benefits.
Where would you choose to live, work and visit?
People are attracted to good quality green space. Providing and improving green space can increase land values and brings health, welfare and environmental benefits.
Income and employment can be generated directly from the use of land. Properties located next to good quality green space can expect an increase in value. A good environment will help attract investment, tourism and higher skilled workers. It can also reduce costs associated with health.
Natural England says that green space can reduce stress levels and extends life spans. Parks, play areas, footpaths and cycle tracks give people the opportunity to exercise and have fun. While allotments and gardens provide a place for growing healthy food.
GI can provide flood water storage. It can create cooler micro climates and is nearly always a habitat for wildlife. These spaces, if well planned, can also serve walkers and cyclists thus reducing the need to drive and burn carbon.
Landscapes have inspired artists and communities for generations. They are part of our heritage, and a vital part of our future. Not only do people live and work in them but they like to spend their leisure time exploring and protecting them.
