Shotley Peninsular Wins £18,000 in I Love Landscapes Competition
27/05/2011
The Haven Gateway Partnership has announced that the winner of its ‘I Love Landscapes’ competition is the Shotley Stour Footpath Renovation Group.
The group of volunteers from Shotley were successful in winning the public vote against two other shortlisted finalists, when voting was carried out in April through the ilovelandscapes.co.uk website. The group will put their £18,000 prize towards the reinstatement, repair and improvement of a section of coastal footpath and a picnic area on the Shotley Peninsular.
The ‘I Love Landscapes’ competition was launched in October 2010, with an aim to highlight projects locally that would establish or enhance green spaces, whilst at the same time redressing the pressure of development. It asked residents of South Suffolk and North Essex to come forward and suggest how the Haven Gateway Partnership should spend its remaining green infrastructure fund.
David Ralph, Chief Executive of the Haven Gateway Partnership, commented: “We’ve been impressed by the number of people who have got behind the competition and we’re looking forward to seeing the completed project. We aim to continue enhancing the exceptional quality of place in the sub-region, by championing green infrastructure for a high quality of life.”
Gary Richens, lead volunteer of the award winning project, added: “We’re delighted to have won the competition and to have secured the money to create a high quality outdoor amenity for everyone to enjoy. Located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we’re hoping the new facility will encourage more people to spend time walking or enjoying the excellent views across the River Stour, all year round.”
