A River for All

Date Started: 01/07/2009

Date Ended: 31/03/2011

Growth Point

This project forms a critical part of the implementation of the Ipswich River strategy helping to complete improved foot and cycle access for a large part of the town's population, for commuting and recreational travel.

Project Scope

A River for All Scheme

The project includes path improvements, new bridges, a water quality study for Alderman Canal, directional signage to and along the river, information boards, a detailed leaflet promoting the corridor and route and a warden type resource to bring the whole corridor into active management to meet the needs of local communities.

Aim of the Project

The project will deliver a new timber bridge in the Alderman Canal local nature reserve with necessary construction, widening and surfacing of the path along the canal.  The River warden post will ensure that the resource is kept to a very high standard and importantly will help generate 300 volunteer days of input each year by direct community involvement.

Outcome of the Project

Enhancements to habitats (ie reedbeds and species) to be measured by survey throughout the project.

Increased use of the river path should have a positive impact on reudction in road traffic in the western town centre and Bramford Road area, reducing congestion and carbon emissions.

Perceptions of danger associated with the Alderman Canal will hopefully be reduced by the improvements planned.
