Resort Masterplanning: Felixstowe Seafront Gardens

The project has arisen from the masterplanning process in the Felixstowe peninsula, which has looked at the problems faced by the coastal town and its environs within a context of population growth.

Scope of the Project

The project will include:

  • Enhancement of heritage building/structures.
  • Improved legibility of entrances.
  • Improved access: DDA compliant access throughout.
  • Enhanced interpretation and signage
  • Enhanced community safety
  • New furniture and planting
  • New childrens play facilities

Aim of the Project

The project aims to restore, adapt and enhance the heritage asset of Felixstowe's Seafront Gardens so that it becomes the focal point of a revitalised resort and offers improved linkage between the resort and town centre.

Outcomes of the Project

The IDP proposes five priorities for expansion and enhancement in Felixstowe and this project addresses four:

  • Improved leisure facilities
  • Improved green infrastructure
  • Improved cultural assets
  • Improved health.

Funding for 2009/10 £25,000

Funding for 2010/11 £50,000

IDP Package: Coastal Towns

Status as at 30 June 2009:

  • Development grant from Heritage Lottery Fund confirmed.

Status as at 30 September 2009:

  • Work on development stage underway
  • Project Board first meeting due 7 Octoer and expected to approve a brief for the lead consultant and an additional brief for the conservation and management plan.
  • Consultants expected to be appointed in January 2010 following tendering process.

Status as at 31 December 2009:

  • Project Development phase progressing well but at request of Heritage Lottery Fund the development phase has been extended.
  • Project Board met for first time in October 2009 and approved brief for lead consultant and an additional brief for the conservation and management plan.
  • Lead consultant will be appointed in January 2010 following tendering process.
  • Some technical and initial user surveys completed.

Status as at 31 March 2010:

  • Consultants appointed to take the project towards a HLF Stage 2 submission.

Status as at 30 September 2010:

  • New project management arrangements in place.
  • Successful programme of events held during the summer to increase participation including a community consultation event.
  • Planned date for submission of the phase 2 HLF bid stands at February 2011.
